Ella Mai Howell (born 3 November 1994, South London) is far more than a Grammy-winning voice behind chart-topping singles — she’s a storyteller whose music reads like pages from a diary, whose warmth recalls the golden era of 90s R&B, and whose resilience turned childhood insecurity into global stardom.
Born to a Jamaican mother and an English-Irish father, Ella was named after jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald — a deliberate choice by her mother, an American jazz enthusiast who filled their home with the sounds that would shape her daughter’s destiny. That namesake carries weight: like Fitzgerald before her, Ella Mai possesses a voice that feels both timeless and entirely her own.
From South London to Queens: The Formative Years
Ella’s childhood was defined by two worlds, and the tension between them would shape both her voice and her character.
At age 12, her mother accepted a teaching job in New York, and the family relocated to Queens. The transition was brutal. In those crucial teenage years when every young person is trying to find themselves, Ella stood out — and not always in a good way. She was bullied relentlessly for her British accent, made to feel like an outsider in her own school.

She found refuge in soccer (football), playing competitively for a decade and even facing a crossroads where she had to choose between the pitch and the studio. She also turned inward, soaking up the R&B and soul that would become her musical foundation: Lauryn Hill, Brandy, Destiny’s Child, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, and Beyoncé. These weren’t just influences — they were lifelines.

Returning to London at 17, she studied at BIMM London and auditioned for The X Factor UK in 2014 as part of trio Arize. They didn’t advance past the first round. Undeterred, she posted covers on Instagram and SoundCloud, where she was discovered by producer DJ Mustard, who signed her to his 10 Summers label.
Their partnership is built on trust and radical honesty — Mustard even made her scrap an entire completed debut album because he knew they could do better.
🔥 The Breakthrough: “Boo’d Up” & The World Stops
Ella released three EPs, but it was “Boo’d Up” (from the Ready EP, 2017) that changed everything.
