The Caribbean music community is mourning two remarkable artists. Jamaican dancehall and gospel reggae star Lieutenant Stitchie has died at 60, just one day before his 61st birthday.

The Mighty Sparrow, whose voice helped define calypso for generations, has died at 91.

Their music came from different islands and different traditions, but both artists had the rare gift of making listeners pay attention to every word.

Lieutenant Stitchie: Dancehall wit and a new calling

Born Cleveland Laing, Lieutenant Stitchie brought humour, quick thinking and vivid storytelling to dancehall. His recordings with King Jammy helped establish him during the genre’s rise, and tracks including Wear Yuh Size and Natty Dread remain part of his musical legacy.

Stitchie later took his voice in a new direction, devoting himself to gospel reggae and ministry. It was a deeply personal change, yet the energy and command that made him a compelling dancehall performer were still there. Across both chapters of his career, he showed how music could entertain, encourage and speak to people directly.

News of his passing is especially poignant as it came on the eve of his birthday. We remember the joy he brought to dancehall and the conviction he carried into his later work.

The Mighty Sparrow: Calypso’s master storyteller

Slinger Francisco, known around the world as the Mighty Sparrow, was born in Grenada and raised in Trinidad and Tobago. His 1956 breakthrough, Jean and Dinah, announced an artist who would become one of calypso’s defining voices.

Sparrow could make an audience laugh, dance and think within the same song. With melody, wit and a fearless eye for the world around him, he sang about everyday life, politics and Caribbean society. His work helped carry calypso far beyond its home while keeping its storytelling spirit at the centre.

For many listeners, the Mighty Sparrow was more than a performer. His songs became part of the soundtrack to Caribbean life and a record of the times through which he lived.

Their music lives on

At Vibrant Radio, we honour Lieutenant Stitchie and the Mighty Sparrow for the voices they shared with us and the paths they opened for others. One helped shape dancehall before finding a new purpose in gospel reggae. The other gave calypso a voice heard across the world.

We send our condolences to their families, friends and everyone whose life was touched by their music. Rest in peace, Lieutenant Stitchie and Mighty Sparrow. Your songs will keep telling your stories.
