Few groups in popular music history have captured the imagination of audiences around the world quite like The Jacksons. From their beginnings in Gary, Indiana, to becoming global superstars, their music provided the soundtrack to a generation and helped shape the sound of pop, soul, and R&B for decades to come.

From The Jackson 5 to Global Icons

The story began with five talented brothers whose harmonies, choreography, and infectious energy quickly made them one of the biggest acts of the Motown era. Songs such as I Want You Back, ABC, The Love You Save, and I’ll Be There became classics almost overnight and introduced the world to the extraordinary talent of a young Michael Jackson.

As they evolved into The Jacksons during the late 1970s, the group embraced greater creative freedom and produced a string of memorable hits including Enjoy Yourself, Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground), Can You Feel It, and Blame It on the Boogie.

The Rainbow Theatre Experience

One moment that has stayed with me over the years was hearing The Jacksons perform Show You the Way to Go live at the Rainbow Theatre. The song’s message of hope, unity, and possibility seemed to fill the entire venue, creating a connection between the group and the audience that was truly special.

Growing up, The Jacksons were more than just entertainers to me — they were an inspiration. Their talent, dedication, professionalism, and ability to bring joy to millions showed what could be achieved through hard work and belief in yourself. Their music became part of the soundtrack of my youth and helped shape my appreciation for great songwriting and unforgettable performances.

Even as they shone together, the brothers had already begun to build paths of their own: Michael launched his solo career as early as 1971, with Jermaine following a year later, while still recording and touring as a group.

After the landmark Victory tour concluded in December 1984, Michael announced his departure to focus fully on his solo work — soon followed by Marlon, who also stepped away to pursue his own projects. The remaining brothers carried on as The Jacksons for a time, releasing their final studio album 2300 Jackson Street in 1989, before officially going their separate ways.

Michael went on to become one of the most successful artists in history, with landmark albums like Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad, and Dangerous, while Jermaine continued to release solo records and tour. Jackie, Tito, Marlon, and Randy each explored music, business, and other ventures, and the group has reunited occasionally over the years — most notably for Michael’s 30th-anniversary celebration in 2001 and the Unity Tour in 2012 — proving their bond remained strong even when apart.

To witness them live was to see those records come alive on stage. It remains one of those treasured memories that only grows more meaningful with time, and a reminder of why The Jacksons continue to be regarded as true legends of popular music.

A Lasting Legacy

The Jacksons’ influence can be heard across generations of artists in pop, R&B, funk, and dance music. Their stagecraft, vocal arrangements, and visual presentation became the blueprint for countless performers who followed.

More than four decades later, their music continues to bring people together, filling dance floors and concert halls with songs that have lost none of their magic or energy.
