A large crowd dances to reggae music and wave Jamaican flags during the Notting Hill Carnival. This is an annual event which has taken place on the streets of Notting Hill each August, over two days since 1965. It is led by members of the Caribbean population, many of whom have lived in the area since the 1950s. The carnival attracts up to 2 million people, making it the second largest street festival in the world. This crowd were also celebrating the Jamaican success in the Beijing Olympics. Traditionally Carnival is opened by local residents and participants, accompanied by the organisers and friends of Carnival.
This year we will return the Sunday to the children, encouraging increased participation with a range of family-friendly activities and events, with the main event being childrenâs mas. Itâs an undeniable joy to see the next generation carrying the Carnival baton â dancing in the streets wearing their carefully crafted costumes.
Get down and âduttyâ. Just like JâOuvert, this mas is for those that enjoy the mayhem. As a spectator you can expect to be splashed with brightly coloured paints and powder or even melted âchocolateâ. Itâs pure revelry, and you canât deny the infectious hyped energy of the party-hard participants, âchippingâ and âwiningâ recklessly to the bass-heavy sound of the âmile-highâ mobile speakerboxes.
If you love to dance in the street but donât want to be âon di roadâ then Sound Systems are where itâs at. Sound systems are a well established and integral part of Notting Hill Carnival specifically. Notting Hill Carnivalâs Sound System tradition is rooted in Jamaican culture and Reggae music, at todayâs Carnival you can hear everything from Rare Groove to House to Samba.
