Few artists embody the evolution of dancehall like Andrae Hugh Sutherland, better known as Popcaan. Born in St. Thomas Parish, Jamaica, and raised in Portmore, Popcaan transformed his early struggles into a career that has made him a global music icon.
Popcaan’s rise began in 2008 when he joined Vybz Kartel’s Portmore Empire. His breakout single “Clarks” (2010), alongside Kartel, became a cultural phenomenon and marked him as a rising star in Jamaica’s vibrant music scene.
Popcaan’s collaborations have brought dancehall to a wider audience. He’s worked with Drake on tracks like “Controlla,” featured on Jamie xx’s “I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times),” and teamed up with Gorillaz and Burna Boy, making him a cross-genre powerhouse.
Despite his global fame, Popcaan has yet to tour in the U.S. due to visa issues, but fan advocacy continues to grow. His influence extends beyond music, shaping Jamaican fashion trends and cultural pride.
Popcaan is more than a dancehall artist—he’s a cultural ambassador who bridges Jamaica’s vibrant music scene with the global stage. With an ever-evolving sound and fearless collaborations, he continues to lead the genre into the future.
