Music serves as a multifaceted companion in our lives, offering solace, stimulation, and a mirror to our emotions. Depending on our needs, we might turn to music to escape, reflect, focus, or connect. Understanding our listening habits can provide insight into our emotional and cognitive processes. Below, we explore various motivations behind music listening:

Listen to Escape

When life can become overwhelming, music can be there to offer a sanctuary—acting as a way to detach from reality and immerse ourselves in a new world. For me, this musical escapism works by using sound to build vivid daydreams and imaginary scenarios, which can temporarily disconnect me from my surroundings. I find myself utilising this type of listening when I am travelling somewhere, from train journeys to long walks. I am able to find solace in the rhythms and harmonies; they transport me away from daily concerns. It is not merely avoidance, but a coping mechanism that allows us to process emotions and regain perspective. An artist I listen to in order to escape would be Frank Ocean, as I admire his ability to display alternate realities.

Listen to Feel

One of music’s most important and greatest powers is its ability to evoke and amplify emotions. We can often choose songs that mirror our current mood, or certain songs that may help us navigate our way through complex and confusing emotions. For instance, melancholic tunes can provide comfort during sorrow, feeling less isolated knowing that this emotion is being felt outside of your bubble. Upbeat tracks, on the other hand, can elevate your spirit and help you restore a positive mindset. This emotional resonance is rooted in music’s sensory capacity to regulate mood and stimulation. By engaging with music that aligns with us emotionally, we can achieve a sense of validation and catharsis. Alternatively, it can help us move through emotional confusion and turmoil through engagement with clear and positive messages.  An artist I listen to in order to feel would be Billie Eilish, as she has an incredible depth and spectrum of emotions in her discography.

Listen to Be Heard

Sometimes, we turn to music to find our own experiences and emotions reflected in certain lyrics and melodies. This act of listening to be heard involves seeking out songs that can articulate feelings that we may struggle to express ourselves. Through this connection, music becomes a tool that offers us understanding, empathy and insight. This often helps people achieve self-awareness, as they can explore and comprehend their inner experiences, possibly even contextualising them to their own reality. In this way, music serves as both a mirror and a messenger, actualising our personal narratives. An artist I listen to in order to be heard is Kendrick Lamar, as he is extremely self-aware and consistently holds himself and the listener to account.

Listen to Enjoy

I often will find myself listening to music for one simple reason: pure enjoyment. The rhythm, melody, or lyrics provoke such a good feeling in us. This can come in many forms: dancing to a favorite pop song, singing along in the car, or getting goosebumps from a beautifully composed track. Listening to enjoy is often less introspective as the other types, and is more about savouring the moment. This kind of listener does not need a deeper reason—joy is the primary target. It is all about letting go, smiling without thinking, and connecting with the sound and the feeling is evokes. Music is absolutely one of the most accessible forms of everyday happiness for me. An artist I listen to in order to enjoy has to be Rihanna, due to her infectious melodies, powerhouse vocals and energetic tracks.

Listen to Grow

One thing I love about music is its ability to track personal growth based on listening preferences, or even artists development. By going through the motions of opening ourselves up to diverse genres, or firmly staying in one sonic space for a while, you can specifically see what direction your life had moved in. Engaging with music that challenges our usual preferences encourages open-mindedness, and being able to learn what you like to hear and stick with it helps you grow confidence and self-assurance. Music can facilitate a reflection on your values, beliefs, and experiences, and lyrics can open your eyes to previously unbeknownst perspectives to inspire growth. An artist I listen to in order to grow or track my growth would be Post Malone, who has had a transformatory career over the past eight years I have been a fan of him.

Listen to Reminisce – Adele

Some of my favourite times to listen to music are moments where I want to be transported back to specific or general experiences to evoke vivid memories and emotions. This is actually a specific process, known as music-evoked autobiographical memory (MEAM). This involves the recollection of personal experiences that are triggered by the powerful stimulus of music. These memories can be tied to significant life events, such as first loves, graduations, or family gatherings, or even a more generalised time in our lives, like childhood, teenage years, university etc. By revisiting these moments through music, we can regain a connection to our personal history, remember who we are, and reinforce our  emotional well-being. An artist I listen to in order to reminisce would have to be Adele, as she made a huge musical impact during my childhood that every one of her classics feel nostalgic.

Listen to Learn – Beyonce

Music can serve as an educational tool, one that gives us insights into different cultures, languages, historical periods and genres. Through lyrics and compositions, listeners can gain knowledge about societal issues, traditions, and world views. This educational aspect of music stimulates my curiosity and critical thinking, allowing me to feel fulfilled and proud of the music I am listening to, as it provides me information tied to catchy melodies. Thus, music not only entertains but also enriches our intellectual landscape. An artist I listen to in order to learn is Beyoncé, as this artist is exceptional at bringing in historical context and reshaping the narrative around marginalised communities and mainstream genres.

Listen to Identify

Music plays a significant role in the formation and expression of personal and social identity. We often align ourselves with specific genres, artists, or musical communities that reflect our own values, beliefs, and experiences. This identification helps to foster a sense of belonging and self-definition. Listening to music that resonates with our cultural background or personal journey reinforces self-awareness and community. Also, sharing musical preferences can strengthen social bonds and garner connections with others who share similar tastes. An artist I listen to in order to identify with is SZA, as her honesty, self-awareness, and overall perspective of the world around her feels similar to my own.

The beauty of music is that you can be listening for more than one reason at the same time, and these reasons can change and develop every second, which is why it will never get old!
